The number of obese people in New Zealand has hit the one million mark.
This has been confirmed in the Ministry of Health annual report.
Green Party health spokesman Kevin Hague says we can not afford the rising cost of obesity-related diseases.
He says hitting the one million mark should be a huge wake up call to the Government.
"The minister has to start issuing some regulations around the marketing of junk food to kids."He needs to institute a tax on sugary drinks (and) he needs to put a front-of-label traffic light signals on all foodstuffs."
