MetService has issued a severe weather watch for Otago, Canterbury, Marlborough, Wellington and Wairarapa.
Forecasters say a cold front is expected to cross much of the South Island tomorrow morning and move onto the southern North Island in the evening.
It will bring rain and severe gales.
The cold snap comes hard on the heels of confirmation this October was the coldest in 64 years.
