Council pleads guilty over landfill worker's death

NZPA November 3, 2009, 6:13 pm

Wellington City Council has pleaded guilty to failing to ensure the safety of an employee , killed when his truck tumbled down a bank at a landfill.

Brian Taurerewa, 55, was excavating a steep track in poor weather last December when his 40-tonne truck lost traction and slid to the bottom of the hill.

The truck's cab collapsed, crushing Mr Taurerewa, who had worked for the council for seven years.

In the Wellington District Court today, the council pleaded guilty to the charge.

It asked that sentencing be adjourned until February for restorative justice meetings to take place between the council and Mr Taurerewa's family and partner.

Judge John Walker adjourned the case until February 9 for sentencing.

Titan Plant Services Limited also faced a charge under the Health and Safety in Employment Act in relation to Mr Taurerewa's death.

The company had pleaded not guilty and would appear in Wellington District Court for a defended hearing next month.
