Home invasion man remanded for further psych reports

NZPA November 4, 2009, 2:33 pm

A man charged with a bizarre Christchurch home invasion remains in hospital, with pyschiatric services asking for more time to complete a report.

Name suppression was continued for the 24-year-old, who was not able to be at the Christchurch District Court for a remand appearance before Judge Brian Callaghan today.

Defence counsel Michael Knowles told the court there was an updated report from a psychiatrist seeking two more weeks.

Judge Callaghan granted the remand in custody to November 25 but granted leave for the case to be brought forward if the man was released from hospital and wished to apply for bail.

Police say the incident took place at a house in the Christchurch suburb of Hoon Hay, when a couple woke to find a man with a knife standing in their bedroom at 4am on September 23.

They spoke to the man and talked him out of carrying out threats he allegedly made, but there was a fight when the police arrived at the house.

An officer received minor injuries from a knife -- police say he was saved from more serious wounds by his stab-resistant vest -- and the police dog Koal was stabbed in the head several times.
