A prominent Waikato principal has resigned as an inquiry into his spending of school funds nears completion.
An inquiry was launched at Hamilton's Fraser High School after allegations Martin Elliott used school money to pay a builder who worked at his Papamoa property.
The former principal maintained his actions were within his contract. He has been on paid leave for several months while the school conducted its inquiry.
Limited statutory manager of Fraser High School John Carlyon says that investigation is nearing an end. He says Mr Elliott's resignation means they can now move forward with some certainty.
