Decision on wharf development unlikely today

Newstalk ZB November 5, 2009, 7:35 am

There is doubt a decision will be made today on which design will be chosen for the development of Auckland's Queen's Wharf.

A meeting of Government ministers and council officials is scheduled, to discuss the short list offered by a panel of experts.

Auckland Regional Council chairman Mike Lee is underwhelmed by the designs and believes more work should be done on improving the designs to make the buildings look elegant and make more of a statement about Auckland.

One of the architects whose design has been short listed, claims there is a mismatch between expectations of the public and what can reasonably be achieved within the budget of $47 million but Mr Lee rejects suggestions that budget restrictions have resulted in what he believes are the lacklustre quality of entries.

Mr Lee is confident that a result can be delivered in time for the 2011 Rugby World Cup but doubts a decision on a design will be reached today.
