Tougher rules for the so-called "new generation" party pills are being welcomed by the people who make and sell them.
Associate Health Minister Peter Dunne says official advice is that the active ingredient DMAA be scheduled as a restricted substance. This would mean the new pills would not be for sale to people under 18, could not be advertised, and could not be sold where alcohol is available.
Social Tonics Association spokesman Matt Bowden welcomes the changes. He says the next step now is to limit how much DMAA a tablet can contain, and the industry will work with the Health Ministry to figure out what is safe. Mr Bowden says regulation is far better than an all-out ban, which would only create a black market.
