Residents of Waihi on the Coromandel are being assured there was no tsunami threat after a problem with the local fire service's alarm system.
Police say the alarm started sounding around 9.30 last night and after several minutes of it going off continuously locals started to evacuate.
Inspector Chris Robinson praised the residents and says they did the right thing by evacuating.
He says the alarm was eventually turned off and technicians are trying to find the cause of the problem.
