Dunedin elects new Anglican bishop

NZPA November 8, 2009, 3:03 pm

The Anglican Diocese of Dunedin has elected a new bishop.

Reverend Doctor Kelvin Wright, 57, had served as the vicar of St John's Roslyn in Dunedin for the last 11 years, after being ordained into the Anglican priesthood in 1980. Dr Wright described himself as liberal, but said he would seek to remain in unity with his fellow bishops.

The Diocese of Dunedin was facing challenges such as declining numbers, ageing congregations and finding the money to support small congregations scattered over rural Otago and Southland, he said.

The church needed to find its own solutions to deal with these issues, Dr Wright said.
