Homeowner not impressed with bail out plan

Newstalk ZB November 9, 2009, 8:31 am

The Government proposal to help out leaky home victims is being met with disappointment by a Wellington homeowner.

Representatives of the six most affected councils meet with the Government today to consider a bail out scheme which will see councils pay 25 percent and the taxpayers 10 percent of repairs. People who cannot make a claim against their local council will get nothing. It is believed that would impact on around half of the number of owners who have houses which leak.

Miranda Patrick's $1.2 million Seatoun home was ruined due to leaks and her son is unwell because of toxic mould. She says the Government's deal will still leave homeowners paying around 64 percent of the repair costs for their houses, which she believes is obscene.

She wants the Government to purchase the leaky homes and for Housing New Zealand to repair and use them for housing stock. Ms Patrick says that way the issue will be fully dealt with and owners will be able to walk away reasonably unscathed.
