Surfer captures shark feeding frenzy

Yahoo! New Zealand June 28, 2012, 1:54 pm

A surfer in Western Australia has captured incredible footage of a feeding frenzy involving around 100 sharks and a whale carcass.

Rachel Campbell posted images and footage of the event on her tumblr blog and YouTube.

Although she will happily surf the waves again, she says the experience was "horrific" as she watched a group of sharks feasted on a dead whale carcass which had washed ashore.

"Picture about thirty sharks, most of which seemed to be tiger sharks, all destroying a whale laying only a few feet from the shore," Campbell posted on her blog.

She says the attack happened about 400m from the shoreline, and soon there were 100 sharks, some 4m long.

"Not the most comforting when you are surfing the reefs that are home to these beasts... Let’s just hope those sharks are full for now."
