Tongariro's 'flame-like explosions'
Mt Tongariro's on heightened alert after its first eruption in 100 years.
The eruption happened in the Te Maari craters which are on the northern side of the mountain.
The activity started at 11.50pm on Monday August 7.
Mt Tongariro last erupted in 1896-97 but the mountain itself is a complex of craters that have been active at different periods.
GNS Science, which has four seismographs, one microphone, two GPS stations and chemical and gas monitors on Tongariro, says the situation isn't stable.
Civil Defence has warned ash could pose a threat to Waikato, Hawke's Bay, Gisborne, Manawatu, Wanganui, Bay of Plenty and Taranaki.
