David Bain Retrial
In 1994 five members of the Bain family were found murdered. David Bain was sentenced to life imprisonment and served 12 years of his 16-year non-parole term after a jury in the High Court at Dunedin found him guilty on all five charges of murder.
Two years ago the Privy Council quashed his convictions and ordered a retrial, ruling a substantial miscarriage of justice had taken place.
On 5 June 2009, a jury found Bain not guilty on all five counts of murder.
