Stricken ship Rena

The Tauranga coast is on the verge of an environmental disaster after a ship ran aground last week.

Oil has reached several beaches around Mt Maunganui and worried residents have begun helping with the clean-up.

Authorities race to pump as much oil as possible off the grounded ship before a storm sets in.

There are fears for wildlife in the area, as some of the 1700 tonnes of heavy fuel oil known to be on board, leaks into the sea.
