Firearm owners say the fatal shooting of a South Auckland teenager with an air rifle is shocking. The 18-year-old died at a Manurewa house on Saturday night. Counties-Manukau police understand a group of five young people had been drinking alcohol while playing with the rifle and an air pistol. Council of Licensed Firearm Owners chair Michael Dowling says it seems basic safety principals weren't followed. "I was a little stunned quite frankly to hear of a death by a spring-powered air gun. That's very unusual." Mr Dowling is advising people to identify their target and not load the firearm until they're ready to fire.
