Auckland Council has agreed in principle to take over the government's stakes in Eden Park and Queens Wharf for free - but ratepayers are set to face a hefty bill. The two sides are in negotiations for the council to take over the government's $20 million half-share in Queens Wharf, The Cloud events centre, and control of five seats on the Eden Park Trust Board. The government says with the 2010 Rugby World Cup out of the way, it no longer needs a stake in those assets. On Thursday night, Auckland councillors voted 12-7 to accept the government's offer.
