Crazy driving or driving me crazy?

Last week's banning of texting and talking while holding a mobile phone in a motor vehicle has been greeted with plenty of enthusiasm - and I think it's great.

As a bike rider – yes that's right I try to ride my bike to work as much as possible, I'm training to do the Lake Taupo challenge later in the year – it's fantastic news to have another one of the hazards taken off the road.

Bike riders in Auckland will tell you they run the gauntlet every day in traffic with drivers who just don't know how to share the road.

Adding a mobile phone to the mix can, in some cases, be like letting an unguided missile out on to the road.

The crash stats prove that people who text or talk on the phone while driving are a hazard.

And by the way, just before someone fires off a blast of abuse about me being holier than thou, I have to say I have been guilty of talking on the phone without a hand's free kit and texting while driving, I also confess to using my blackberry in the car.

So I've got to sharpen my act.

But why stop at just taking away texting and talking on the phone while holding it?

I've seen some crazy stuff while I've been out on the road – in my car and on my bike.

The first one I can't get a handle on is the people who let their dogs sit on their laps while they're driving – seriously what are you doing?

Where I grew up, dogs went on the back of the ute, not up the front next to the steering wheel.

Then of course there are the people who read in the car.

There's obviously the people who read maps while they're driving, that's understandable but still horrendously dangerous.

Not only are they not looking at the road but there's a high chance they're on their way to being lost.

I've also seen some of the craziest stuff on extremely busy roads in Auckland, like the man reading the newspaper or the woman reading her van full of kids a story – yes that's right a storybook was plain to see on the steering wheel and it was pretty evident she was reading out loud.

Then of course there are the women who put their make-up on in the car on the motorway.

Without wanting to sound sexist I'll also add in here the men who have a shave in the car on the way to work.

But I'm sure that's just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to crazy stuff that needs to be banned from cars, so here's your chance to tell your story of danger on the roads and have a vent if you think you're being hard done by.

I think it is really good that finally the use of mobile phones while driving is banned. The next thing the government needs to do is raise the minimum driving age to 18 years old and to restrict the car engine size to 1600cc for learner drivers and for at least one year after passing their test.

I drive a shuttle between the North Shore and Auckland airport. Shaving, make-up, truckies eating pies - all old hat. My worst driving dit is going up thru Spagetti Junction southbound in morning peak traffic at 80km/h and a young lady in a red Honda Civic hatch driving with hands on the wheel and texting with a cell phone in each hand! The customer next to me was gob smacked. At the lights at Gillies Ave I *555'ed her.

I agree its only the beginning, I think the very dangerous and distracting practice of smoking while driving should be banned too.
