How many second chances do we have to give?

William Curtis' defiant comments through his lawyer today at his sentencing prove how dysfunctional some people really are.

Curtis, the father of convicted child murderers Michael and Wiremu Curtis, is apparently unremorseful about his part in the child's demise.

The 50-year-old was found guilty of eight assault charges which occurred during a four month period. The charges included an incident when Curtis wrapped a scarf around Nia Glassie's neck and lifted her off the ground until she showed signs of choking.

Curtis pleaded not guilty to all the charges and then sent a message through his lawyer to say that he was unremorseful and regarded the jury which convicted him as a lynch mob.

Judging by the popular opinion expressed on message boards all over New Zealand he is probably lucky it wasn't in fact a lynch mob.

This sort of defiant rebuttal is just further proof that an element of New Zealand society just doesn't give a damn.

How a man of this age could actually think there was nothing wrong with the punishment being dealt out to this little girl is beyond belief.

And more to the point how he obviously stood by and watched his own sons dish out this kind of violence to a defenceless little girl proves that they too stood no chance at ever becoming functioning members of society.

There's no doubt they obviously thought it was a joke, funny and almost acceptable.

They knew no better.

That is disgusting.

And the fact is that this is happening all around the country as we speak.

The ad campaigns to stop violence in the home may very well be working but we are still all seeing stories about kids being beaten senseless on a regular basis.

The anti-smacking bill has obviously been another raging failure.

The people behind it have not addressed the problem instead they have simply shifted the boundaries.

Why the Police and the likes of Child Youth and Family do not have the power to save little children from these situations makes New Zealand seem like a third world country.

We have focused for too long on being Politically Correct and giving everyone a second chance.

Why?

Why haven't we shown a hardline?

Why do we allow criminals the chance to re-offend?

Why does life in prison not actually mean life?

And how does that ever make up for a little child being killed?

We need to have a bold experiment. For five years bring back hanging for murder. Bring back judicial canings for juvenile delinquents, and the birch for more serious crimes. And allow schools to bring back the cane. Why wouldn't the liberals allow this? Bcos they know it'd show that their emperor has no clothes. The holy grail they've followed for decades is 100% wrong. Let's take back control b4 it's too late.

New Zealand could lead the world in rolling back this PC nonesense. We could show the rest of the West how we've all be conned by four decades of feminist claptrap. Their only argument against this is 'it won't work', but they're all too scared to give it a try because in their heart of hearts they know what the real outcome would be.

There are several generations now of untreated drug addicts and alcoholics. It is the generational dysfunction that creastes these people. Address that problem and a lot of violent ,anti social behaviour will drop. Problem is the Labour government made that task more difficult when instead of supporting our largest and most effective addiction treatment facility they closed it. Thos responsible for its financial failure,Hanmer Institute, have never been made to account for that.

Why is it that everytime there is a high profile case involving violence and Maori that they always call for it to be handled by the local marae. Did Maori not protest South Africa's apartheid system and yet here they are demanding seperate development and seperate systems of justice, health, education etc.. is this not apartheid? If Maori dont like the NZ justice system perhaps should keep their noses clean...

First problem religion was removed from schools ,kids have no idea what morality is ,Tv Games make light of killing and violence.
The campaign to blacken the credulity of the Bible makes the basic commandmends optional .All 10 of the comandments make sense and are the basis foe decent human existance .
Secondlty there is no concept of first or last or of punishment for crime ,sentances are soft (except for trafic offences) punishment in schools is non existant
