Rocking the nation

A new show hitting the small screen next week is must-watch TV for anyone calling themselves a Kiwi!

"I think it started in the late 60s with the identification that New Zealand wasn't an outpost of Great Britain," said Rocked the Nation 2 director Mitchell Hawkes on when Kiwi pop culture really came into its own in a recent interview with TimeOut.

"I think over the past 40 years we have become willing to celebrate what it is to be a New Zealander. That is what the pop culture moments are - they are so specifically New Zealand because they're so random."

Hosted by Flight of the Conchords (and The Boat That Rocked) star Rhys Darby, Rocked the Nation 2 promises to take viewers on a ride through the top 100 moments in Kiwi pop culture.

Some of NZ's most colourful characters get a shout-out, including king of comedy Billy T, Hollywood bad boy Cliff Curtis, our very own Y!X blogger Buck Shelford and the yodelling Topp Twins.

The 100 moments range from the enlightening to the humourous, with a touch of the sentimental too. Ahhhhhh!

With commentary from some of New Zealand's leading entertainers, intellectuals and key players, Rocked the Nation reflects Kiwi culture in an informative and contemporary way - Hawkes even jokes that it would be good as part of an immigrants' package...

To find out more about what made us hate our Aussie cousins, how Kiwis wrote The Office before Ricky Gervais and whatever happened to the Bushwhackers, tune in to C4 on Monday at 8.30pm.
