Sick, reclusive leader

North Korea is at it again. After annoying the international community with long-range missile launches, they've gone and got nuclear on us. With the whole world watching and stomping their feet angrily in the wake of the initial launches, this nuclear weapons test is the mother-of-all middle fingers.

It's been a while since the world has had such an archetypical ‘baddie'. I guess the last one was the United States under George Bush. But with the election of the most likeable man in the Known Universe as President, the U.S.A is back to being A-OK, and now it's all up to North Korea to fly in the face of the United Nations.

And they're doing it with all the gusto of a military parade... that's because they're having military parades. A lot of them, fairly regularly it would seem. They have one after their launches and nuclear tests, and possibly after every Kim Jong Il bowel movement.

Watching the One News footage of these parades I find it incredible that North Korea can even afford to have a nuclear weapons program. It's got to take a fair chunk out of the budget to have thousands of people waving flags in unison, soldiers and vehicles perfectly choreographed and football field-sized posters of Kim Jong Il hanging from buildings. Their printing costs alone would rival New Zealand's GDP.

So why is North Korea doing this? Why are they so flagrantly behaving in such a ridiculous manner? Last night One News reported that North Korea is claiming these actions are to defend socialism and to defend the state. But I think political reporter Francesca Mold was on to something when she hinted it might have something to do with "sick, reclusive leader" Kim Jong Il. Maybe he wants to drum up enough trouble so that he can slip in his own choice of successor when he dies. There is one problem with that theory though; we may never even find out when he dies.

He is so hermetic and mysterious that North Korean State media could get away with saying he's still alive one hundred years from now. They're already claiming he shoots 3 or 4 holes in one every time he plays a round of golf.

It's just really scary having a guy who is so clearly, for want of a better word, CRAZY, in charge of nuclear weaponry. And sadly, it looks like the only way for Kim Jong Il to be stopped is from direct, strong intervention from the Western super powers. We can only hope this intervention doesn't filter into Hollywood action movies as it did in the 80's... Clean cut U.S.A buff men fighting ‘the reds' gets old fast.

Hmmm... only 500 Characters... how do i do this???

I too think that Kim is a dick, but think about this... he has seen many a country around him fall to the hands of the west... what better way to scare the begeebers out of the US than to show them he has has a big weapon too? In my opinion it is a massive PR exercise to maintain his control over the country, his immigration policy is similarly controlling. His problem is now that China have control over them, supplying 90% of N Korea's o

haha... interesting conclusion there. One must remember that even with WWII there wasn't necessarily a good side and a bad side as such, because politics isn't clean cut like that. Even some Nazis were good men. So judging anyone at this stage because of the leader of their country isn't a good move. Not that you are. I've just heard people saying that because Kim is 'a nutbar', the rest of his nation must be too... how ignorant can you get?

How pathetic the above comments are.
It is all about Nth Korea selling nuclear weapons to Whoever wants them.
First they need to prove they work, now they can sell them cheaper than China and Russia or Iran(note how these countries have reacted.)
Wake up Kiwis it is a bad world out here(i am posting from Vietnam)
It is all about selling arms for lots of cash
Forget about personal attacks and see things as they really are.
Whether Kim is dead or alive will make no difference.
