The Southern Motorway in central Auckland has reopened and a woman police had concerns for is now being helped.

The incident on Friday afternoon on a bridge on Grafton Road near to the intersection of Carlton Gore Road disrupted traffic.

Police managed to get the woman to safety and she will now be seen by medical professionals for assessment.

Police said they tried to ensure the movement of traffic continued and several lanes were reopened during the hour it took to deal with the incident.

The entire motorway has now reopened.
