This year’s solar eclipse put Casper, Wyoming in the national spotlight, as the city’s clear skies and elevation are great for galaxy gazing. But this place has eclipsed other outdoor destinations for a long time: What began as a classic Western town with cowboys, gamblers, bootleggers and the like is now a go-to spot for travelers who love wild adventures in mountains, rivers and fields.
Of course, all this scenery provides some stunning photo opps. We took a virtual trek through Casper and the surrounding area on Instagram to find the spots most worthy of a ’gram.
1 Platte River Trails
Nearly 10 miles of trail follow the North Platte River river through Casper and past campgrounds, public art installations and plenty of scenery. Stop to fish, paddle, float or take photos as you trek.
2 Sherrie's Place
3 Muddy Mountain
4 Hogadon Basin
5 Wyoming Ale Works
6 Tate Geological Museum
7 Johnny J's Diner
8 National Historic Trails Interpretive Center
Through a series of interactive exhibits, this museum details how travelers used the Oregon, California, Mormon and Pony Express Trails to cross Wyoming in the 1800s. Replicas of tipis and covered wagons will make your followers think you've traveled back in time.
9 The Nicolaysen Art Museum
10 Urban Bottle Wine & Spirits
A pair of local couples opened this boutique liquor store last year as a place to savor beer, wine and spirits with friends. Some of the tastings and events feature live music in a historic space that's worth capturing on film.
11 Hell's Half Acre
Head about 40 miles west of Casper to see this ravine full of otherworldly rock formations. Your Insta followers may recognize it as a setting from the 1997 movie "Starship Troopers."
12 Garden Creek Falls
This spot is just a short hike from the Bridle Trail trailhead in Rotary Park, near the base of Casper Mountain. Snap a photo of the falls as a souvenir, then continue on for spectacular views of Casper from above.
