13 Reasons Why star reacts to Zach and Hannah twist

Forget Clay – it's all about Hannah and Zach now.

13 Reasons Why's second season revealed a secret, adorable summer romance between the pair as Zach Dempsey – played by Ross Butler – was forced to share the details while testifying in court.

Numerous fans were won over by Butler and Katherine Langford's chemistry (you can check out some of the many tweets here), and although the development came as a bit of a shock to Butler himself, he said that their romance "felt organic".

"I had lunch with Brian Yorkey a couple of months before production, and he gave me the full lowdown," he told Elle. "It was a surprise, but it made sense to me, and it felt organic.

"It was a lot of what I was playing in the first season anyway – I always felt Zach truly cared about Hannah, and was just afraid to tell his friends about her, though I didn't think that we lost our virginities to each other!"

Unfortunately, their relationship ended once school began again.

Zach decided that he did not want to go public – wanting to protect Hannah (or himself, depending on how you want to interpret it) – given the company he keeps at school, which includes Bryce Walker. And Hannah reluctantly agreed to it.

But Butler admitted that he really wished Zach had stuck by Hannah.

"It did kind of change my opinion on Zach – I'm a bit more disappointed in him now, but I get where he's coming from," he said. "I think teenagers can relate to the pressure of being someone they want everyone to think they are.

"And it is nice to finally get to see a relationship that's somewhat healthy, even though it ends for pretty bad reasons."

13 Reasons Why season two is available now on Netflix.
