What we know about 2025 Bafta film awards as nominees revealed
The prestigious British ceremony will help kick off awards season, and details have emerged of who has made the longlist for all 25 categories.
The EE Bafta Film Awards is on the horizon as the New Year marks the beginning of awards season, and new details have emerged about the prestigious British ceremony.
On Wednesday, 15 January the shortlist of nominees was announced by 2024 EE Rising Star winner Mia-McKenna Bruce and Bafta-winner Will Sharpe. This comes after the Rising Star nominees were confirmed, which included Mikey Madison and Marisa Abela. The Rising Star award is voted for by the public, while the titles that have made the shortlist will go through to another round of voting for Bafta members.
From the celebrity who will be hosting the show to the details of the night itself, here is everything that you need to know about the 2025 Baftas.
The Bafta 2025 nominees
In the Best Film category some of the biggest movies of 2024, and the buzziest of 2025, made the cut, with Anora, The Brutalist, A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Emilia Pérez. Conclave led with the most nominations with 12 nods, with Emilia Pérez coming second with 11 nods followed by The Brutalist, Anora, Dune: Part Two and Wicked.
Irish indie film Kneecap — which swept the board at the British Independent Film Awards in December 2024— made failed to make the shortlist but was nominated for Outstanding British Film amongst other awards. Kneecap was shortlisted alongside Bird, Blitz, Conclave, Gladiator II, Hard Truths, Lee, Love Lies Bleeding, The Outrun, and Wallace and Gromit: Vengeance Most Fowl.
In the acting categories, the Best Actress shortlist nominees are Cynthia Erivo for Wicked, Demi Moore for The Substance, Karla Sofía Gascón for Emilia Pérez, Mikey Madison for Anora, and Saoirse Ronan for The Outrun. Madison and Moore are currently the frontrunners for this award at the Oscars, and that is likely to be the case at the Baftas though Ronan will also be well in for a shot for her performance in The Outrun, sadly Golden Globe winner Fernada Torres was snubbed by the awards show.

When the comes to Best Actor, it is a similar thing with Oscar frontrunners Ralph Fiennes and Adrien Brody shortlisted alongside Colman Domingo, Sebastian Stan, Timothée Chalamet, and Hugh Grant. Daniel Craig was notable absent from the shortlist for his performance in Queer, and despite getting nominated in the Original Screenplay category, Dev Patel failed to make the cut for his leading performance in Monkey Man.
In the Supporting Actor category it was Edward Norton, Guy Pearce, Jeremy Strong, Kieran Culkin, and Yura Borisov who were named.
Emilia Pérez's Zoe Saldaña and Selena Gomez are shortlisted in the Best Supporting Actress category, as is Ariana Grande for Wicked, Felicity Jones for The Brutalist, Isabella Rossellini for Conclave, and Jamie Lee Curtis for The Last Showgirl. Notable snubs include Margaret Qualley, who failed to be nominated alongside her co-star Moore.
The Best Director nominees were named as The Brutalist's Brady Corbet, Anora's Sean Baker, Conclave's Edward Berger, Dune: Part Two's Denis Villeneuve, The Substance's Coralie Fargeat, and Emilia Pérez filmmaker Jacques Audiard.
Original Screenplay nominees include Anora, The Brutalist, Kneecap, A Real Pain, The Substance, while in the Adapted Screenplay the nominees include A Complete Unknown, Conclave, Emilia Perez, Nickel Boys, Sing Sing. Dune and Challengers were both notably snubbed in the shortlist for the major categories, with the only nomination the former received of the big five going to Villeneuve.
The Bafta Rising Star nominees
Five actors have been confirmed for the EE Rising Star award, including Marisa Abela, Mikey Madison, Jharrel Jerome, David Jonsson, and Nabhaan Rizwan. They were nominated for their work in Back to Black, Anora, Unstoppable, Alien: Romulus and In Camera, respectively
The public are able to share their vote in for the EE Rising Star Award, with voting opening shortly. The winner will be announced at the ceremony, previous winners of the award include Mia McKenna-Bruce, Lashana Lynch, Kristen Stewart, and Letitia Wright.
Who will be hosting the Bafta 2025 Awards?
Speaking of hosting, the 2025 Bafta film awards will once again be led by none other than David Tennant who delighted viewers with his performance as host at the 2024 ceremony. The Rivals star delighted with his bedazzled kilt and his fun back-and-forth with frenemy Michael Sheen, and he proved to be a hilarious face to the awards show.
When will the Bafta 2025 Awards be on TV?
The 2025 Bafta film awards take place on on Sunday 16 February 2025 at the Southbank Centre’s Royal Festival Hall. The red carpet will start earlier in the day with the ceremony itself expected to begin around 7pm that evening.
It will be broadcast live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer in the UK, while in North America, the Nordics and Australia it will be available to stream on BritBox. Further international broadcasters will be announced by Bafta in the near future.
