Best for Tummy Control: Miraclesuit Plus Size Moderate Control Hi-Waist Brief
Who It’s Good For
Anyone looking for a shaping brief that sizes up to 4X and offers shaping, tummy control, and support.
Who It’s Not Good For
This shaping brief is available in only two colors and may fit too tightly for some people.

The Wonderful Panel Tummy also provides excellent tummy control and shaping — all while remaining invisible under your clothes (kind of like magic).

Shapewear comes in all forms, from bodysuits to slips to thongs. So, if you are looking to add some shaping briefs to your collection, these from Shapermint will help you create the smooth silhouette you love without making your wallet cry a river.
Available in sizes up to 4X, these briefs are made from a nylon and spandex blend that is lightweight and wears seamlessly underneath clothes. But they aren’t only smoothing; they're also sturdy with a non-slip grip, and a double-layered design offers great coverage from top to bottom. Of course, the five classic colors are the cherry on the top of the sundae.
However, you’ll want to remember that shapewear is like a push-up bra for your whole body — it can work wonders, but it's not always the most comfortable option. How to Pick the Right Plus Size Underwear
Size
As plus size stylist Ashley Full puts it, underwear is the starting point to every outfit. And when it comes to shopping for plus size underwear, size is crucial. Full explains that many brands are still learning what a true plus size scale is, resulting in products that often run small.
To avoid any sizing mishaps, she suggests looking for brands that showcase their underwear designs on different body types. “This will give you a better idea of how the item will fit, and having a plus size model is a good indicator that the brand used a plus size woman to fit test their designs,” Full says. "Not all brands do this, and it makes a huge difference when it comes to accurate sizing.”
Support
Finding the right amount of support in underwear can be tricky, but it is possible. Just make sure you're getting the right amount of support by choosing undies with all the right features (elastic waistband and leg openings, comfortable fabric, etc.) before you hit buy. “It’s kind of like the tale of Goldilocks and the Three Bears,” Full explains. “You’ll want something that is not too stretchy and not too tight, but just right.”
Quality
“Finding plus size lingerie you love isn’t easy, so a high-quality piece is often worth spending a little extra on,” Full tells PEOPLE. “These pieces are usually built to last, and the more you can use it, the more value you get.”
Materials
When it comes to underwear materials, the options are truly endless: silk, mesh, cotton, and more. But no matter what material you choose, the most important question to ask yourself is how it makes you feel, says Full. After all, you're going to be wearing underwear all day long, so it should feel like a second skin.
If you're wanting a pair that's breathable, however, look underwear made with cotton or other natural fabrics like bamboo. Underwear made from synthetic materials tends to be less breathable than underwear made with cotton, silk, or bamboo fabricsw. Our best cotton underwear pick, for example, is the Duluth Trading Co. Plus Free Range Organic Cotton Hi-Cut which features 94 percent organic cotton with 6 percent spandex to achieve the product's four-way stretch and soft-on-skin benefits.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do you measure for plus size underwear?
When it comes to plus size underwear, it's all about knowing your measurements, says Full. “Figure out your chest (for bras), waist and hip measurements to help you determine how the designer scaled when designing their underwear,”she explains. “With plus size, this is crucial, as XXL is not equivalent to a 2X.”
Is it better to buy underwear bigger or smaller?
Because plus-size underwear options are still evolving, you may find pairs from some brands run small, explains Full. “So, if you're having trouble finding the correct size, or are between sizes, don’t feel discouraged to size up for a more comfortable fit."
What material are best for underwear?
“Whether you are plus size or straight size, material preference is always subjective,” Full tells PEOPLE. “Numerous people encounter sensory difficulties with specific fabrics or struggle with tight waistbands, so you really need to find what works best for you. With that being said, I recommend choosing underwear made from natural fibers like cotton. Cotton is breathable, comfortable, and cooling, making it a great go-to fabric choice for all body types.”
