Have you ever had that feeling on a flight that you would give anything to be able to just stretch out your legs and lie down for a good sleep? Well soon that will be a possibility.

Air New Zealand has unveiled its new Skynest feature, which gives economy passengers the ability to book a sleep pod on long-haul flights - but it’ll cost you.

"New Zealand's location puts us in a unique position to lead on the ultra-long-haul travel experience. We have zeroed in on sleep, comfort, and wellness because we know how important it is for our customers to arrive well-rested,” Air New Zealand CEO Greg Foran said.

“Whether they are heading straight into a meeting, or to their first holiday hotspot - they want to hit the ground running.

"We wanted to offer our economy customers a lie-flat option and that's how Skynest was born. It's going to be a real game changer for the economy travel experience."

How much will Skynest cost?

The bunk beds will be located between the economy and premium economy cabins. Each passenger will be limited to one four-hour session, with lights turning on and passengers woken up at the end of their allocated slot.

It will cost between $400 and $600 for a single four-hour sleep session.

Each pod will come with a full-size pillow, sheets and blanket, ear plugs, a reading light, USB outlet, ventilation outlet and lighting designed for rest, as well as a seatbelt.

Bedding will be changed in between each session, with a 30-minute transition time.

When will the feature be available?

Air New Zealand's new Dreamliners are due to be completed and in action in 2024 and has been confirmed on New York and Chicago routes from September 2024.

Each passenger will be limited to one session, with families travelling on the same ticket able to book a session for each passenger, pending availability.
