A pilot has walked away unscathed after a light plane crash in Waikato.

Emergency services were called to the old Mercer Airfield near Koheroa Road, about 23km southeast of Pukekohe, at 6.03pm, a Fire Service communications spokesman told NZ Newswire.

He said early information from the scene indicated the plane had crashed near the airstrip.

One person was on board but was not believed to be injured.
