Shores in the Bay of Plenty and Nelson regions will turn into nudist beaches on Saturday as naked cyclists protest oil dependency and to celebrate the human body.

Cyclists are encouraged to "bare as you dare" at two New Zealand World Naked Bike Ride events on Saturday afternoon - one in Tauranga and the other in Takaka, Golden Bay.

The "clothing optional" bike ride has been held in 74 cities, in 17 countries, around the world.

A naked bike ride will also be held in Middlemarch, South Island, on March 18.

The World Naked Bike Ride Wikipedia web page says the event hopes to "deliver a vision of a cleaner, safer, body-positive world."
