Police are still trying to locate the family of a woman who was struck and killed by a train in Dannevirke, northwest of Palmerston North.

The 52-year-old woman was hit by the train about 8pm on Monday near Allardice Street, a statement from police says.

"Attempts are still being made to identify and locate any next of kin," police said.

An autopsy will be carried out on Wednesday to establish the exact cause of death, but police say there are no suspicious circumstances.
