A 73-year-old psychiatric hospital patient has died after being attacked by a pack of wild dogs living on the property.

The man died Thursday, a day after about a dozen dogs attacked him, biting his head, arms and legs, said Mary Gesto, a hospital union leader. "I'm a nurse and I'm not easily shocked, but this was disturbing," she said.

Many of the dogs belong to patients of the hospital in Colonia Etchepare, about 50 miles (80 kilometres) northwest of Montevideo. But due to lack of attention, they had become wild, Gesto said.

More than 100 dogs live at the site and efforts to control them have been rebuffed by a group of hospital staffers, she said. On Thursday, hospital workers protested to demand a solution to the danger.
