Reports suggest the death toll from the tornado that struck West Auckland today is set to rise.
Two deaths were intially reported but police have confirmed to APNZ that the number has risen to three. Serious injuries and damage have been reported as the storm made landfall and the intensity increased.
The storm has destroyed houses at the NZ Air Force's married quarters in Hobsonville.
Auckland Civil Defence have issued a warning that more tornados likely.
"Auckland Civil Defence is closely monitoring the situation in West Auckland where there are reports of fatalities and roof damage following a tornado around lunchtime."
"Police have set up an operational base at Whenuapai near where the worst of the damage is reported."
"Metservice warns there is the likelihood of more tornados may be experienced in the next few hours"
Auckland mayor Len Brown used social media to get a warning out to all Auckland residents.
"Very concerned by reports of a tornado out at Hobsonville Point with damage and casualties. Also reports of surface flooding and damage in other parts of Auckland. Please stay safe and if possible stay inside until the weather clears,"
