Passers-by scrambled to rescue a family of three from their car swallowed by a five-metre sinkhole that opened in the middle of the road in Peru.

Mum, dad and their three-year-old daughter were driving in the city of Trujillo in the country's northwest on Thursday when the ground disappeared beneath them.

"Some people helped us, but we feel fear, because the water began to filter by the car."

The hole was reportedly caused by a burst water main. Only a few weeks ago garbage truck in the same city was also swallowed by sinkhole, the website reports.

This family was lucky their fellow citizens were on hand to help, but their experience shows how frightening and unexpected sinkholes can be.
