Man shot by police in central west NSW

A man has been shot in the buttock by police in Cowra in New South Wales' central west region.

A photograph of the incident has emerged on Facebook, appearing to show a police officer with his pistol drawn and aimed towards another person.

A man with dark skin, who appears to have his back turned in the photograph, appears to be the target, however, a second image posted to social media shows police arresting a different man as a man in a red shirt stands close by.

The image was reportedly taken moments before the pistol was fired, posted by a man named Justin, the post claimed the man in the red shirt was unarmed and had been shot.

"...Pure racism at its finest," they wrote.

The Cowra Guardian reports the target was armed at the time. A spokesperson for NSW Police has confirmed the shooting but would not confirm if the victim had a weapon.

A witness told the paper the man had been seen with a baseball bat.

"They shot him in the buttocks," they said.

"He's pretty bad.

"He was running away from them but somebody said before that he had a baseball bat."

Fairfax reports locals have identified the man as Dennis Doolan. They said the shooting occurred after a woman was stabbed in a neighbouring street earlier in the day and the situation escalated.

The shot man's family had reportedly been attending a funeral before they arrived at the scene where they confronted police.

A second Facebook image revealed the red shirted man was likely not in the police officer's sights when the pistol was fired. He is seen again as another man lays handcuffed on the ground. Photo: Facebook

The local paper said police had chased the man through a series of backyards before the shooting at about 11.30am on Wednesday on Jindalee Circuit.

The teenager reportedly survived and was taken to the Cowra Airport to be flown to hospital for treatment for non-life threatening injuries.

An ambulance spokesman confirmed the man, believed to be in his 30s, was shot in the left buttock at about 12.10pm.
