WATCH: 3D flyover captures damage along Kaikoura coast after earthquake

The New Zealand Transport Agency has shared 3D imagery which captures the scale of the damage following the 7.8 magnitude earthquake.

The NZTA said they used 3D technology to help them assess the key areas of damage along the Kaikoura Coast from Oaro, south of the town, to the Clarence on the north side.

The footage also shows raised seabeds in the wake of the November 14 quake.

The video has emerged as a National Transition Period for recovery after the devastating earthquake comes into force.

Acting Civil Defence Minister Gerry Brownlee says it will support a smooth and well co-ordinated recovery where there are complex multi-regional issues across local boundaries, including the road and rail network.

"A National Transition Period will help us to manage those issues with national implications, and to provide the wrap-around support to local authorities that will ensure effective recovery at a local level," Mr Brownlee said.

It is in force in the Kaikoura, Hurunui and Marlborough districts and includes the Canterbury Regional Council and central government agencies.

Former New Zealand Transport Agency group manager Dave Brash has been appointed as a National Recovery Manager to co-ordinate the process.

The state of local emergency in Kaikoura was lifted as the new transition period came into force.
