The Kenya National Human Rights Commission estimates that at least 82 people have gone missing since June, when protests erupted over President William Ruto’s plans to introduce unpopular taxes, with 29 still missing. Seven people have been snatched since mid-December, the commission said last week.

Protesters in the Nairobi central business district on Monday chanted the names of Kenyans who have disappeared this month and demanded to know their whereabouts, according to footage by broadcast by Citizen Television.

“We are here to demand that the government releases our brothers who have been abducted,” one of the protesters said.

As criticism against the seizures grows, Kenya’s National Police Service has denied involvement, while Ruto last week promised to bring an end the abductions.
