SINGAPORE — Jack Neo's latest comedy, Ah Girls Go Army, raked in S$1.67 million at the Singapore box office as of 7 February, six days after its opening.

Production company mm2 Entertainment has also confirmed that a sequel to the movie is coming soon, according to CNA Lifestyle.

The movie, a spin-off of director Neo's Ah Boys To Men films, is set in an imaginary Singapore where females are conscripted into the military alongside males.

Ah Girls Go Army opened on 1 February in Singapore, Malaysia and Brunei.

The box office takings for the movie take into account four days of sneak previews before its official opening.

Apple Chan and Glenn Yong star in the movie, along with more than a dozen actors that Neo cast through audition videos submitted by influencers and netizens.

The mm2 spokesperson did not confirm a release date for the sequel, but said that it would be announced soon. mm2 acknowledged that reception to the movie had been "mixed".

The film had already run into a couple of controversies before its release. Neo apologised for naming a character played by transgender actress Kelly Kimberly Cheong "Amanda Man". This character was renamed as "Amanda Ong".

The director was also accused of fat-shaming over a character played by plus-sized actress Xixi Lim.

The character was named "Yuan Yuan Yuan", a repetition of the Chinese word for "round".

Neo and Xixi both denied that there were negative intentions in the portrayal of the character.
