Alexander Skarsgård is capitalising on his Emmy win for Big Little Lies, signing on to star in BBC thriller The Little Drummer Girl.

Adapted from the John Le Carré novel, Skarsgård will appear alongside Florence Pugh (Lady Macbeth) in the six-part series airing next year.

Pugh stars as young actress Charlie who finds herself involved with an intriguing stranger while holidaying in Greece in the 1970s.

She ends up embroiled in a high-stakes plot with the man called Becker (Skarsgård), who turns out to be an Israeli intelligence officer.

Old Boy's Park Chan-wook will direct the series in his TV debut and has praised Skarsgård's casting, saying: "To play an enigmatic man who hides his true feelings deep inside, I couldn't think of a more fitting actor.

"I believe Skarsgård's growing depth as a great character actor and his soaring energy will elevate The Little Drummer Girl to a high place."

The Little Drummer Girl is a collaboration between The Ink Factory, BBC One and AMC.

Simon and Stephen Cornwell, co-CEOs and Founders of The Ink Factory, said of the project: "The level of expertise and creativity behind this series is unmatched, and we are excited to be gathering a cast of incredible talent to inhabit the brilliant world le Carré has created.

"Alexander Skarsgård is a captivating actor with great depth and we are delighted to have him join the project."

We're hoping Skarsgård's hair will have grown back properly before shooting begins, after he shocked fans with a shaved scalp last month.
