'Dreams do come true': Alex McKinnon's wedding miracle

Alex McKinnon and Teigan Power have opened up about the incredible moment the wheelchair-bound former NRL player stood at their wedding.

The two were married in front of family and friends in the NSW Hunter Vally earlier this month, with McKinnon fulfilling his promise to rise from his wheelchair on their wedding day.

"It took 3 years of EVERYTHING I’ve got in me to achieve this moment of standing with my beautiful wife on our wedding day, dreams do come true," McKinnon posted on Instagram on Monday alongside a photo of the magical moment, published exclusively by New Idea magazine.

According to the mag, even the tough men of the NRL were reduced to tears, including groomsmen and former teammates Darius Boyd and Dane Gagai.

"I couldn't believe Alex stood for all that time," Teigan told New Idea.

"It was lovely to be able to look him in the eye, rather than looking down at him in his wheelchair.

"It just made the ceremony that much more intimate. We started crying every time we caught each other's eye. It was beautiful."

McKinnon's promising rugby league career was cut short when he suffered a devastating spinal cord injury playing for the Newcastle Knights in March 2014.

He was diagnosed a quadriplegic and proposed to Teigan from his hospital bed just days after the devastating accident.

The couple's journey has been inspirational and harrowing.

Teigan has frequently shared progress of his rehabilitation and just weeks ago shared a video of McKinnon walking with the help of a frame and two medical staff.

"So proud of all the hard work Alex McKinnon puts into his rehab," she said.

McKinnon, now 25, said earlier this year he considered himself lucky.

"A lot of people with spinal cord injuries aren't improving three years down the track," he told Fox Sports.
