Aubrey Plaza Explains Why She 'Never' Wears Underwear (Even on Set!)

The actress also advises others “don’t ever wear underwear in life”

Aubrey Plaza’s rule of thumb when it comes to underwear is to skip wearing it altogether.

The actress, 40, recently filmed a sit-down video with her My Old Ass costar, Maisy Stella, for Entertainment Weekly, which led to a confession from Plaza about her love for going commando. Here’s how it happened.

At some point in the clip, Plaza expresses some kind of discomfort in the way she’s sitting ("I'm on fire," she says specifically). Wondering if it was the chair or her “old ass,” Plaza thought maybe the problem was that she was quite literally butt naked. "Maybe I should've worn underwear, but I never do. And then I get f—ed,” she said.

The Parks and Recreation alum may have been joking about her lack of underwear (or not), but she doubled down on her no-bottoms philosophy nonetheless.

"I feel like acting is all about, you have to have your body in this weird malleable state," she said while telling Stella the “rules” she likes to follow on set.

"Never have to pee when you're doing a scene. Even if you a little bit are like, 'Maybe I have to pee,' just get it all out. Just get whatever fluids out. Be like an empty vessel. And if you don't wear underwear, it can come out faster. So don't ever wear underwear in life." she added.

Despite what Plaza really thinks about letting her backside breathe, her mindset hasn’t stopped her from incorporating underwear into her red carpet looks.

Case in point: on Sept. 23, she attended the N.Y.C. premiere of her other film, Megalopolis, wearing a lace Dolce & Gabbana look consisting of a sheer skirt that put her high-waisted briefs on full display.

This also wouldn't be the first time Plaza has dared to bare with her outfits. Last February, she attended the 2023 SAG Awards in a bronze sequin Michael Kors gown with a criss-cross neckline that revealed quite a bit of underboob (just like her stylist, Jessica Paster, had envisioned).

Plaza recently revisited the memorable look earlier this month — and how not big of a deal it was.

"My boobs aren't really like... If I had giant knockers, maybe I'd be like, 'Whoa. I gotta keep these things...,' " Plaza said on Sirius XM’s Howard Stern Show on Sept. 11.

"Is this different from any other dress I wear?" she asked. "I didn't think that dress specifically was like, 'Woo. Check it out. I'm gonna really make a splash here with this underboob.'"
