Geelong's Jock Landale and his St Mary's College squad, featuring five other Australian players, have been controversially left out of the coveted 68-team NCAA basketball tournament in the US.

The California college was a top 20-ranked team after a strong season record of 28-5 but last week's failure to win the West Coast Conference tournament title led to the NCAA tournament snub.

Australia still has strong representation in the tournament, which starts on Tuesday, with Jack White's Duke, Keanu Pinder's Arizona, Dejan Vasiljevic's Miami, Gorjok Gak's Florida, Gabe Hadley's New Mexico State and Jacob Epperson's Creighton booking berths in the knockout tournament which dominates sport in the US until the April 2 final.
