Aust man guilty of rape in Philippines

An Australian man accused of raping and trafficking girls in the Philippines has reportedly been found guilty.

Filipino news website Rappler reports a regional court in Cagayan de Oro city found Peter Gerard Scully guilty of sexually abusing young children.

Judge Jose Escobido convicted Scully of one count of human trafficking and five counts of rape by sexual assault, Rappler said.

The man, originally from Victoria, is facing life in jail.

He is reportedly facing more than 50 other cases in courts across the Philippines.

An Australian Department of Foreign Affairs spokeswoman told AAP the department was providing consular assistance to an Australian man detained in the Philippines but due to privacy obligations, could not comment further.
