Baby drowns after falling into mop bucket as mum answered the door

A baby boy has drowned after toppling headfirst into a bucket of water after his mum took a quick break from mopping the floor to answer the front door.

The tragic incident took place in the neighbourhood of Castelo Branco in the city of Cariacica in the Brazilian state of Espirito Santo at around 3pm on November 25.

Eleven-month-old Joao Miguel fell into the bucket of water when his mum, who was cleaning the house, went to talk to her nephew at the front gate.

The victim's aunt, who asked to remain anonymous, told the news portal G1: "She was tidying the house, mopping up. And the boy was in the pantry, on the floor, near the table.

"When she went in, she didn't see the boy. When she went to the kitchen, she saw the boy in the bucket of water."

The mum and her sister tried to revive the boy for almost an hour. They called emergency services, who instructed them what to do over the phone. However, it was not possible to save him.

"She started to shout and I heard her cries asking me for help, saying he wasn't breathing," the aunt said.

The distraught mother was reportedly sick twice following the boy's death.

"It was hopeless. She's in despair. She was sick, she took medication, and we took her to the doctor's again," her sister said.

The baby boy's body was subsequently taken to the coroner's office in the nearby city of Vitoria.

It is unclear what stage police investigations are at and whether action will be taken against the boy's mother.
