Barbie’s box office news comes after it became Warner Bros.’ biggest movie of all time after hitting $1.34 billion at the world box office in August.
Barbie also became the highest-grossing film of 2023 in August, surpassing The Super Mario Bros. Movie. This came after Greta Gerwig’s Barbie became Warner Bros.' highest-earning domestic release ever.
Barbie stars many big names such as Margot Robbie, Ryan Gosling, Will Ferrell, America Ferrera and Issa Rae. The movie follows Barbie (Robbie) and Ken (Gosling) as they navigate life in the real world, away from Barbie Land.
"Of course, I’ve known who Barbie is for forever,” Gerwig told PEOPLE ahead of Barbie’s release. “And there’s some sort of collective memory that I wanted to tap into, something about: We invent things like dolls to explain to ourselves what it means to be human."
"Part of me wondered if there was a way that we could allow the doll to also have that humanity," she added. "Wouldn’t it be wonderful if the Queen of Plastic was given something real?"
