Batsman embarrassingly runs himself out on misfield

A Sunrisers Hyderabad batsman has suffered one of the more embarrassing run outs in recent memory in the Indian Premier League overnight.

Mumbai Indians had Sunrisers struggling at 8-106 when Siddarth Kaul came to the crease with five balls remaining in the 16th over.

The medium pace bowler, far from a batting threat with a Twenty20 best of just eight runs, started off slow with just one scoring from his first eight balls.

And then disaster struck.

Kaul sliced a ball to backward point but it was stopped by Hardik Pandya, who fumbled the ball through his hands.

As soon as the batsman saw the misfield he took off down the pitch, only to realise his partner Yusuf Pathan had never really moved.

Pandya had picked the ball up and shaped to throw at the bowler’s end before being told by a teammate to hold off.

Yet even with the fielder’s multiple hiccups, Kaul was in no man’s land and run out by two metres.

“Goodness me, there’s been confusion everwhere,” said Simon Doull in commentary.

Kaul’s dismissal didn’t help Hyderabad’s hopes of increasing the target, which ended up at just 119.

But the saving grace was Kane Williamson’s captaincy.

The New Zealand skipper managed his bowling changes to perfection as Sunrisers somehow had Mumbai all out for just 87.

All six bowlers took wickets, and Kaul had something to smile about by the end of the night.

The 27-year-old all but finished Mumbai off when he dismissed Manyak Markande and Mitchell McClenaghan – and then he got revenge on Pandya for the run out, dismissing the Test allrounder in the 18th over.
