Monty Python's Eric Idle is the same person as Steve Punt, according to BBC Breakfast.

The morning show made a blunder earlier today (October 17) as hosts Dan Walker and Louise Minchin interviewed Idle about his career.

A range of photos were displayed on screens behind them, only one of the pictures was of comedian Steve Punt.

To be fair, it's an easy mistake to make, since Punt played Idle in the BBC adaptation of Holy Flying Circus in 2011.

"Full marks to @BBCBreakfast for using a pic of Steve Punt and not Eric Idle during his interview," wrote one viewer.

"Eric Idle is so polite he hasn't mentioned the fact that there's a giant picture of Steve Punt on the screen behind him on @BBCBreakfast," another said.

"BBC Breakfast pay tribute to their guest Eric Idle by putting up a picture of Steve Punt in the background. #research," a third joked.

Monty Python are icons of comedy, the group consisting of Idle, John Cleese, Michael Palin, Terry Jones, Terry Gilliam and the late Graham Chapman.

The phenomenon expanded out of TV show Monty Python's Flying Circus, including iconic movies such as The Meaning of Life and Life of Brian.

The group most recently reunited for a series of live shows at London's O2 arena in July 2014. Earlier this year, Monty Python's back catalogue was made available to stream on Netflix in the UK and Ireland.
