The beauty look at Shrimps was inspired by Princess Diana

The Royal family proved fruitful inspiration for the beauty looks at Shrimps' autumn/winter 2020 show, but untraditionally there wasn’t a crown or tiara in sight, with the designer instead celebrating more convention-breaking Royals like Diana, the Princess of Wales and Princess Margaret.

The result was regal glamour but with a contemporary feel, courtesy of two make-up choices – a true red lipstick and a grey-wash smoky eye – alongside playfully coiffed hairstyles.

THE MAKE-UP

Each of the two make-up looks focused on accentuating one part of the models' features – either the lips or the eyes. For both, there was a focus on very matte skin, with an almost powdery finish to reduce shine.

Defined as the "classic Queenie", the royal red lipstick was a classic high-shine shade, but was designed to be playful rather than sexy or too polished. Think Princess Margaret more than the Queen of England.

The lip colour in question was Glossier's Vinylic Lip in Baby, applied straight from the bullet because "a brush just doesn't cut it," explained lead make-up artist Celia Burton. A hint of blush also softened the look, giving the models' a youthful pinky glow as if they had been out walking in the grounds of their manor house.

Look two: "the Lady Di eye"

Inspired by Princess Diana's love for a soft smoky eye, the second look was "warm and friendly; a bit sexier than the first look but still fit for a royal," according to Burton.

To achieve the contoured eye finish, Glossier's Colorslide Pencil in Brack was used along the lash line to add definition and then blended out over the eyelid. That was followed by multiple coats of mascara for bold but, importantly, clump-free lashes.

THE HAIR

It’s time to dust off your rounded brush again, as coiffed, blow-dried hair is back, but with plenty of lively volume and texture added in. With a variety of looks all with a different Princess in mind – from Anne to Margaret – the common denominator was, fittingly, lots of height at the crown.

This was achieved using volumising products, including Bumble and bumble's Thickening Mousse, blow-dried into the hair with particular focus on flicking the hair at the front up and away from the face. Then, the ends were curled around the aforementioned rounded brush (the smaller the better) so it flicked inwards towards the head.

THE NAILS

Dubbed “the revenge nail” after Princess Diana’s iconic dress and her tendency to wear bolder nail colours after her divorce, the deep red nail colour that featured on a handful of the models was from The GelBottle’s relatively new sister brand, Peacci. It was in deliberate contrast to the rest of the nail looks – a sleek, traditional glossy manicure – that would have looked perfectly in place on the Queen’s fingertips.
