Sweeten the season with these chocolate countdowns from Compartes, Godiva and other top chocolatiers. (Williams Sonoma, Compartes)

The only thing that beats opening up one big present on Christmas morning? The joy of unwrapping 24 (or more!) little presents on the days leading up to it. Chocolate advent calendars are arguably the sweetest way to get in the spirit, and this year's releases are a choc full of fun.

Quick overview

We're still a couple months out from the most wonderful time of year, so the full 2024 slate isn't available just yet. That said, chocolate advent calendars from tried-and-tasted favorites like Godiva, Compartes and See's Candies are already out, so you can (and should) make your pick well in advance. Even if you place your orders now, most of the countdowns won't ship out right away to ensure peak freshness. Snow need to worry, though: The elves are already hard at work and ensure a safe arrival sometime in October or November.

Now, I have a few very important questions for you. Are you dreaming of a dark chocolate Christmas? Milk? White? You'll find a little bit of each in the advent calendars below (especially the ones from Godiva and Harry & David), but some keep it simple with one variety of chocolate (like Neuhaus). Keep in mind that there are also different tiers of chocolate advent calendars, ranging from affordable, kid-friendly classics to straight-up luxurious selections for adults who enjoy the finer things in life.

Pick your price (countdowns start at $10) and sweetness level, then work your way down this list to find one that catches your eye. And if you want even more options, check out my list of this year's best advent calendars — filled with makeup, tea, toys, you name it.

Pull back the cover to reveal 24 doors — each one has a decadent milk, dark or white chocolate tucked inside. Some are straight chocolate, while others are filled with salted caramel, almond crunch and sweet ganache. Psst, refrigerate your chocolates upon arrival, so they'll still be fresh come December.

To taste See's is to love it, which is why I'll be counting down to Christmas with their advent calendar this year. The century-old confectioner traded their iconic black-and-white boxes for this snow-covered brick house, complete with pull-out drawers for easy candy access. Unwrap 24 of their most beloved sweets, including their Lollypops and creamy truffles.

Belgium is known as the "chocolate capital of the world" — and this advent calendar from one of the country's most beloved chocolatiers is perfect for little ones with more, uh, sophisticated palettes. Kids will have to work a little bit to track down the right number, but once they do, they can pop the flap open and snack on a rich chocolate filled with praline.

Turn the drawers around and stick them back inside their designated spots to reveal a special message just in time for Christmas.
