It almost didn't happen. The catastrophe that has been the last year and a half nearly put paid to the Met Gala for 2021, but though it didn't happen in May as it usually does, organisers sprung to action as soon as restrictions were significantly lifted to ensure that the show would go on, in the latter half of the year.
This year's theme: 'In America: A Lexicon of Fashion' was born, to rival the 'Heavenly Bodies' and 'Notes on Camp' themes which have gone before and true to form, many celebrities were puzzled about how best to express the dress code. Some went for old Hollywood glamour (looking at you Billie Eilish and Gigi Hadid), others used the opportunity to take a dig at the current state of the United States (hi there, AOC). On the other hand, a few celebrities chose to revel in Americana, such as Jennifer Lopez who arrived in a cowboy hat and gun-holster belt. And finally, there were the predictable crowd who chose to mark the occasion by wearing very little at all - sheer dresses and bedazzled thongs abound.
But whatever the Met Gala's dress code, and whoever chooses to attend, you can always rely on one particularly great outcome of the night's entertainment - the memes. Each year, nifty photoshoppers and quick-off-the-draw tweeters join forces to make fun of the outlandish costumery.
From Lil Nas X's multiple reveals (the musician wore three different layers, which he peeled each more fabulous than the last, which he peeled off on the red carpet for spectators), through to Kim Kardashian's masked Balenciaga look, hundreds of internet-dwellers were ready to parody and poke fun.
In fact, memes have become such a routine part of the Met Gala, that this year the organisers chose to employ their first ever 'meme correspondent,' in the form of Saint Hoax.
For every sense of humour, there was a meme created to suit, so here are a few of our favourites to come out of the night:
