Beloved Better Homes and Gardens presenter Ed Halmagyi has announced he will be leaving the popular Channel Seven lifestyle program after 20 years.
The 48-year-old chef and cookbook author, who is known as ‘Fast Ed’ on the show, is stepping back from the long-running series to focus on a personal business venture.
“After more than two decades of sharing recipes as a presenter on Better Homes and Gardens, I have made the decision to step back from my role on the show,” he said in a statement via Seven on Monday morning.
“I never intended to work in television, it just kind of happened. In 2004 I was asked to do a screen test, and the fact I am still here on Better Homes and Gardens 20 years later is equal parts fantastic and bizarre. This is the longest job I have ever had, and it’s time for me to have a new adventure.
“I have been honoured to get the chance to tell stories to people who love food every week and be part of this amazing show that is part of Australia’s fabric. I will certainly miss being a part of Australia’s Friday nights and working alongside my Better Homes and Gardens family.”
Ed went on to share that his new venture will see him return to his roots as a pastry chef and open a Jewish bakery.
“As someone whose life is so deeply invested in all things from the oven, the idea of creating a truly authentic and spectacular Jewish bakery has been simmering within me for nearly a decade,” he continued.
“So Avner’s (my Hebrew name) is coming to life, with bagels, bialys, babka, rugelach and the most killer potato bread you’ve ever tried!”
'You will be so missed'
After the news was shared on social media, fans took to the comments to express their sadness over his departure and wish him well for the future.
“Oh Ed I will truly miss you. We’ve loved watching you over the years and wish you all the best in your new endeavour,” one person wrote.
“You will be so missed but we wish you well on your new adventure,” another added. “With you at the helm, Avner's I'm sure will be a huge success.”
“I’ve enjoyed 20 years of watching you Ed. You truly will be missed. I wish you well. I’ll miss you,” a third shared, followed by someone else who said, “Love Ed and he will be missed but good luck with Avner’s”.
Ed’s final episode will air Friday, December 1, with Channel Seven set to announce his successor in early 2024.
