Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell open about the 'weirdest honeymoon ever'

Bindi Irwin and Chandler Powell’s start to married life wasn’t quite as romantic as they'd planned, with the newlyweds forced to scrap their honeymoon at the last minute.

The loved-up pair tied the knot at Australia Zoo back in March, just hours before coronavirus lockdown restrictions came into place.

And now they’ve revealed how they actually spent the days after their wedding, after canceling their post-wedding getaway.

USA Today reports that in the upcoming TV special, Crikey! It’s the Irwins: Life in Lockdown, the 21-year-old daughter of late conservationist, Steve Irwin, said her honeymoon with 23-year-old Chandler was unconventional, to say the least.

“It’s not the most romantic honeymoon in history, but it’s our honeymoon,” Bindi said.

Chandler went on to call it “probably the busiest honeymoon in history, along with the weirdest honeymoon ever”.

Bindi previously told US Weekly: “It was an incredibly stressful time as Australia Zoo was flung into lockdown and we had no idea if or when our doors would be open again.

“It was heartbreaking and scary for all of us. We spent our honeymoon doing our best to care for our animals and zoo team hoping that things would get brighter.”

She went on to say that they couldn’t even get alone time on a romantic picnic Chandler has planned, with her younger brother, Robert, tagging along.

“You know what every bride wants after she gets married? To celebrate her honeymoon with her brother on a romantic picnic the first time we’ve been alone in the last month,” she joked.

Back in June, in a trailer for the upcoming special, Bindi said they had originally planned to do a road trip but the responsibility of running the park founded by her late father Steve Irwin took priority.

“It’s really scary trying to make do with a limited number of staff, and to take care of 1,200 animals,” she explained.

Back in May, Bindi was philosophical about how the newly married couple’s first few months as husband and wife had panned out.

“Our honeymoon may not have turned out as we’d planned, but we’re grateful to be spending time with our beautiful animals,” she captioned a snap of herself and Chandler with one of the park’s resident giraffes.

“Things are incredibly busy here while we’re temporarily not open. We’re all working together to make sure our animal family is happy.”

Bindi’s mum Terri Irwin revealed the dire state that the family’s wildlife park — and home — was left in after being forced to close due to the coronavirus outbreak.

“The pandemic has severely affected Australia Zoo financially... I can’t even come close to paying bills. We’re having to stand down staff and it’s very emotional,” a worried Terri said.

The 55-year-old went on the outline the staggering cost of running the Zoo, with 52 per cent of the park’s income — roughly $400,000 per week — going to staff members’ salaries alone.
